How to show up in AI answers: SEO for Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity
A growing share of buyers now ask an AI instead of scrolling ten blue links. The tactics that earn citations in AI answers overlap with good SEO — with a few important differences.
Search behaviour has shifted. A meaningful share of commercial research now happens inside Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity and similar tools. These systems don't rank pages — they cite sources. If your business isn't one of the cited sources, you're invisible to that buyer.
What AI answer engines reward
- Direct answers near the top of the page. Lead with the answer, then elaborate. AI systems extract passages, not whole articles.
- Specific, verifiable claims. Numbers, comparisons, named processes. Vague marketing copy is skipped.
- Entity clarity. Consistent business name, services and location across your site, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn and directories.
- Structured data. Organization, Service, FAQ and Article schema help machines understand what you are.
- Third-party mentions. Being referenced on other credible sites is a stronger trust signal for AI than it ever was for classic rankings.
A practical checklist
- Rewrite your key service pages with a two-sentence answer block at the top.
- Add an FAQ section that answers the questions buyers actually ask an AI ("how much does X cost in India", "X vs Y").
- Publish comparison and "best of" content where you can be honest and specific.
- Make sure your site is crawlable by AI bots (check robots.txt — many sites block them by accident).
- Track citations: search your category in ChatGPT and Perplexity monthly and log who gets cited.
The good news
Everything above also improves classic SEO and conversion rates. Businesses that do this now are building a lead source their competitors won't notice for another year.
